interesting thougth -- what do you think?

Truth rests with the Minority

Soren Kierkegaard

Truth always rests with the minority, and the minority is always stronger than the majority, because the minority is generally formed by those who really have an opinion, while the strength of a majority is illusory, formed by the gangs who have no opinion- and who, therefore, in the next instant (when it is evident that the minority is the stronger) assume its opinion . . . while Truth again reverts to a new minority.

it's an interesting idea, but i don't know that i totally agree with kierkegaard. i do think it's true that a minority of the people often advocate for change for a long time before the majority catches on. but what about when the minority becomes the majority? he does address that point to some extent, but while i'd agree that the minority can often stir change in society that doesn't necessarily mean that their position is always true. sometimes they are with the side of truth and sometimes they're not. there are some truths held by the minority that never spread to the majority...perhaps because they aren't truth at all?

i agree wtih you that i disagree. i think he's going somewhere with that idea but to me, he hasn't thought it through completely.
