Sydney and the roadtrip back

Our friend, John, bought a car, which he had to pick up in Sydney, which, as we found out, is about 14 hours drive from Brisbane. He asked us if we’d like to fly down there and have a roadtrip in his new car back up to Brisbane.

Of course we’d like that! We went down there a day early to have some time to see the city.

As I have said before, Australia reminds me of America a lot. Big streets, tall building, shows on TV, people, the $ sign by prices, big cars on the streets, and a lot more.

Sydney gave me a little flashback to NYC with its busy harbor, tall buildings built in the style of the beginning of last century, busy streets, boat rides from the harbor, the trees there are a little different than here, in Queensland, they were bare and had some orange and yellow leaves on, which gave a distant feeling of fall to both of us.

By far the highlight of the trip was the little boat ride which we happened to take right as the sun was setting. I don’t have to tell you, you can see it yourself.

How often do you happen to get perfect shots of the Sydney Opera House with bright pink in the background?! On the other side there was dark blue sky with lightening flashes.

Somewhere in the middle of the day we happened to stumble upon … no, not a clothing outlet… a Toni Roma’s Rib Restaurant. Do you really think that Neil could think of get excited about anything else? The whole day he was wearing the biggest smile and kept schmoking his lips when he thought about it. And he thought about it pretty much … until the time we got there. A full rack of ribs went down in about 7 minutes of complete silence and all you could hear was finger licking and “mmm” sounds.

When there was a pile of bones where a pretty back of baby pig ribs came in, the conversation restarted. Needless to say that was the highlight for Neil.

John arrived the next day early in the morning. He picked up his lovely little white VW Golf and we were off. After a 5 hour drive we stayed the night in Port Macquarie – a gorgeous place on the coast.

All three of us turned into little icicles during the night, which just made our trip more memorable. And funny, when Neil found an electrical heater blanket under the sheets of our bed, which of course we never knew about and didn’t use.

On the third day we drove from 7:30 am until 5:30 pm – straight to the church service! It was beautiful and we saw a lot of kangaroos on the sides of the road. Dead ones, knocked over by passing cars. It was so sad :(

It was a great trip and we got to hang out with John a little. There are lots more pictures here.
