Wounded hearts

I've been reading "Wild at Heart" by John Eldredge. While the book is intended for men, I've been reading it to try to understand better my husband as I've grown up with all girls in the family and feel like I will learn a lot.

I came across a quote that I think is appropriate to men and women, it is very profound. As women we are a little bit better at being able to release the wounds and cry them out but there are still a lot of things that even us, girls, hide deep inside and don't let out:

God is fiercely committed to you, to the restoration and release of your [masculine] heart. But a wound that goes unacknowledged and unwept is a wound that cannot heal. A wound you've embraced is a wound that cannot heal. A wound you think you deserved is a wound that cannot heal. That is what Brennan Manning says, "The spiritual life begins with the acceptance of our wounded self."
