Sugar

I've been off sugar for over 10 days now. No chocolate, cakes, cookies, candy, added sugar, no fruit, and alcohol because it turns into sugar in the body. I could count on fingers of one hand the times that I have had white bread or pasta. I also cut out coffee and aged cheeses.

I am the picture of health on two legs.

I've been having so many health issues that a visit to a doctor convinced me - I had to do something proactively to help my body get back in balance. I had to take two really strong kinds of antibiotics after I lost the baby and that has started a mayhem of imbalance inside.

I thought it would be really hard but in all honesty (and God's help) it is actually not that hard. Don't get me wrong, there are times when I have to wipe a drool when I see chocolate croissants or hazelnut chocolate, which is my absolute favourite. The trick is not to give in. I figure that if I tried a little bit, I would want to keep going, so I don't even try a little bit. Plus, if I have stayed off it for this long, I don't want to ruin it.

Another trick is to have something to replace the things that I crave. Instead of chocolate I will eat nuts, instead of coffee I have this natural drink that has the same consistency of coffee and that does the trick for me when I feel like I need to get up and make a cup. Did I mention that I've been drinking tons of tea?

I think that I have more energy now. That might be because of the cupboard-full of all natural pills and potions (that taste disgusting) that I've been taking twice a day every day.

I know that this won't be a quick fix. But so far so good. I've tried this once before and it lasted a whopping 3 days before the chocolate cake put its spell on me. This time the difference is knowing that there is no other option - this is it.

I've heard that it takes 21 days to make a habit. Keep it up!!!

Also, have you heard of the book Made to Crave? The founder of Proverbs 31 ministries wrote it, she spoke at a conference I went to a couple weeks ago and she's amazing. She gave up sugar as well, and has been off it for two or three years...

I have a goal of giving up sugar all but one day every month. I recently finished 30 days straight, and it was surprisingly easy. Then I had my one day of sugar and was unimpressed. I wasn't all that excited to have it, and now I'm starting a new 30 days.

Definitely worth it. Keep it up!
